Can I sow turnips directly into the ground. I’m not good at caring for trays

I grew up on a farm where turnips were grown but I haven’t been able to grow them in my heavy soil

It is always more effective to sow them in trays and then plant them out. However you can sow directly in to the soil once the soil temperatures are over 8 degrees. Normally in late April to late June. If doing this you will need to add some seed compost in to the hole when you sow your seeds. This will improve the sowing success rate quite significantly
