Is it possible to sow seeds past July, in August, say in a greenhouse?

Absolutely. Most crops other than hot crops like Tomatoes, Peppers, cucumbers etc can be sown now. It is actually a great time of year to sow salads, beetroot, brassicas etc for Autumn. So go for your life as lots of growing time still ahead. Some of the crops will be ready before the winter closes in and others will stay in the ground growing until late Autumn and then be ready in early Spring
