How much of the plant should be dug back into soil to get the benefit? Also when should this be done?

So i would cut them back towards the end of March to free up the bed for new planting. You can cut them back to about 2 inches above the ground and the cuttings can go in to your compost bin as these are a huge benefit to the compost bin. If you don't have a compost bin just spread on the bed they are in after being cut and they will break down on the surface. The rest of the stalk left in the ground will break down in the soil
