Hello, do you need to put the base for this down on a hard surface, or can it go down on grass?

Hi there, thank you for your question. Provided you purchase the optional steel base, the Orion greenhouse can be installed on grass using the steel pegs that come with the base. If installing on grass, you would need to ensure that the area is level and free from obstructions. Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance. Andrew
